(of other people)
I plan to update as I find /remember.
a snowstorm in egypt in 2013, 112 years after the last one. It produced many great images, though I believe the sphinx one is fake, and this is my favourite.

I have not so far being succesful in tracing its origins.
this is the oldest posting and highest quality I’ve found but it’s from a “moments before disaster” compilation. https://mmm.dk/9-billeder-der-er-taget-lige-inden-katastrofen-indtr-ffer-8684/
Marejadas – every time tidal waves are expected, people are warned to stay away. they often don’t listen, sometimes with tragic results, sometimes it’s just funny. like this couple who have etched themselves in Chilean history through recklessness. Now their photo is posted by news outlets like bio bio, having become a visual representation of a tidal wave warning

I’m also searching for the origins so far I’ve got https://www.cooperativa.cl/noticias/pais/tiempo/las-marejadas-siguen-golpeando-al-litoral-central/2017-02-02/194322_2.html – and this in HD https://zefirka.net/2023/10/20/podborka-prikolnyx-kartinok-2060/
The problem with these is that they get reposted so much, without credit, that the original is often lost in the noise. even more so if the original post was deleted.

tank man – absolutely iconic.
One of the things i like about it is mixing the the mundane of a man going grocery shopping with an incredible act of bravery such as standing up to tanks. another aspect is the mistery of it. we don’t know who he was or what happened to him. there are different stories people tell but no one knows.
The events surrounding the protests at Tiananmen square are heavily censored and China doesn’t really allow remembrance events, preferring to forget about it all, lest anyone gets ideas.
“we can be heroes” seen in stgo’s metro after david bowie’s death

capucha vs paco – during the “estallido social” when there were many many many protests in santiago, and many many many amazing shots. some award-winning ones even.

another of my faves – unity in the chaos
waves hitting a lighthouse

the Ar-men lighthouse in french brittany, known for its isolated location and there’s so many amazing photos of there.
jean guichard also has some great one at La Jument, including one where the keeper appears to be checking the weather

“tenemos + pintura”
in case it isn’t obvious, this means “we’ve got more paint” so the inference is that someone painted the metal shutters, the bank painted over it, and then they came back and wrote what reads somewhere between a threat and a monument to stubborness.

“St Paul’s survives” there have been many churches where St Paul’s Cathedral stands. the last one burned down in the Great Fire of London in 1666, and was later rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. it took 27 years I believe. So, during the Blitz, they were very concerned with protecting this historic church. they had crews guarding it constantly. it took a few hits, but it made it, and this image became one of the most iconic ones, embodying “Blitz spirit”

did you know NASA’S JWST is on Flickr? they have soooooo many gorgeous shots
